Summary
Red Hat Security Advisory: cloud-init security update

Notes

Topic
An update for cloud-init is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.2 Update Services for SAP Solutions. Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having a security impact of Important. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score, which gives a detailed severity rating, is available for each vulnerability from the CVE link(s) in the References section.
Details
The cloud-init packages provide a set of init scripts for cloud instances. Cloud instances need special scripts to run during initialization to retrieve and install SSH keys, and to let the user run various scripts. Security Fix(es): * cloud-init: Cloud init permissions flaw (CVE-2024-6174) For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.

On non-x86 platforms, the fallback to platform enumeration with default datasource scanning could allow cloud-init to treat a malicious or spoofed local metadata service as authoritative, granting root-level execution of arbitrary user-data or scripts during early boot. Since cloud-init runs before most security controls are active, exploitation would provide persistent and unrestricted system compromise with no user interaction.",
