Summary
Red Hat Security Advisory: pandoc security update
Notes
Topic
An update for pandoc is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.
Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having a security impact of Moderate. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score, which gives a detailed severity rating, is available for each vulnerability from the CVE link(s) in the References section.
Details
Pandoc is a Haskell library for converting from one markup format to another, and a command-line tool that uses this library. It can read several dialects of Markdown and (subsets of) HTML, reStructuredText, LaTeX, DocBook, JATS, MediaWiki markup, TWiki markup, TikiWiki markup, Creole 1.0, Haddock markup, OPML, Emacs Org-Mode, Emacs Muse, txt2tags, Vimwiki, Word Docx, ODT, and Textile, and it can write Markdown, reStructuredText, XHTML, HTML 5, LaTeX, ConTeXt, DocBook, JATS, OPML, TEI, OpenDocument, ODT, Word docx, RTF, MediaWiki, DokuWiki, ZimWiki, Textile, groff man, groff ms, plain text, Emacs Org-Mode, AsciiDoc, Haddock markup, EPUB (v2 and v3), FictionBook2, InDesign ICML, Muse, LaTeX beamer slides, PowerPoint, and several kinds of HTML/JavaScript slide shows (S5, Slidy, Slideous, DZSlides, reveal.js). In contrast to most existing tools for converting Markdown to HTML, pandoc has a modular design: it consists of a set of readers, which parse text in a given format and produce a native representation of the document, and a set of writers, which convert this native representation into a target format. Thus, adding an input or output format requires only adding a reader or writer. For pdf output please also install pandoc-pdf.
Security Fix(es):
* cmark-gfm: Quadratic complexity bugs may lead to a denial of service (CVE-2023-24824)

First, the vulnerability specifically targets input with large numbers of specific characters (`\u003e` or `-`), which means it is highly context-dependent and unlikely to be triggered by typical use cases. In practice, the majority of markdown documents are unlikely to contain these patterns in excessive quantities. Furthermore, the issue requires input from untrusted or malicious sources to be exploited, as normal, well-formed markdown documents will not trigger the problem. \n\nWhile the quadratic time complexity can lead to significant resource exhaustion under certain conditions, it does not inherently enable arbitrary code execution or direct access to sensitive system resources.", "title": "Statement" }, { "category": "general", "text": "The CVSS score(s) listed for this vulnerability do not reflect the associated product\u0027s status, and are included for informational purposes to better understand the severity of this vulnerability.", "title": "CVSS score applicability" } ], "product_status": { "fixed": [ "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.aarch64", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.ppc64le", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.s390x", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.src", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.x86_64", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-common-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.noarch" ] }, "references": [ { "category": "self", "summary": "Canonical URL", "url": "https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2023-24824" }, { "category": "external", "summary": "RHBZ#2210172", "url": "https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2210172" }, { "category": "external", "summary": "https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2023-24824", "url": "https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2023-24824" }, { "category": "external", "summary": "https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-24824", "url": "https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-24824" }, { "category": "external", "summary": "https://github.com/github/cmark-gfm/security/advisories/GHSA-66g8-4hjf-77xh", "url": "https://github.com/github/cmark-gfm/security/advisories/GHSA-66g8-4hjf-77xh" } ], "release_date": "2023-04-01T00:00:00+00:00", "remediations": [ { "category": "vendor_fix", "date": "2025-06-03T00:43:18+00:00", "details": "For details on how to apply this update, which includes the changes described in this advisory, refer to:\n\nhttps://access.redhat.com/articles/11258", "product_ids": [ "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.aarch64", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.ppc64le", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.s390x", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.src", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.x86_64", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-common-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.noarch" ], "restart_required": { "category": "none" }, "url": "https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2025:8427" }, { "category": "workaround", "details": "No mitigation is currently available that meets Red Hat Product Security\u2019s standards for usability, deployment, applicability, or stability.", "product_ids": [ "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.aarch64", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.ppc64le", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.s390x", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.src", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.x86_64", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-common-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.noarch" ] } ], "scores": [ { "cvss_v3": { "attackComplexity": "LOW", "attackVector": "NETWORK", "availabilityImpact": "HIGH", "baseScore": 7.5, "baseSeverity": "HIGH", "confidentialityImpact": "NONE", "integrityImpact": "NONE", "privilegesRequired": "NONE", "scope": "UNCHANGED", "userInteraction": "NONE", "vectorString": "CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H", "version": "3.1" }, "products": [ "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.aarch64", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.ppc64le", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.s390x", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.src", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.x86_64", "CRB-8.10.0.Z.MAIN.EUS:pandoc-common-0:2.0.6-7.el8_10.noarch" ] } ], "threats": [ { "category": "impact", "details": "Moderate" } ], "title": "cmark-gfm: Quadratic complexity bugs may lead to a denial of service" } ] }
